ATHENS, Ala. – Hedy Lou Cannon, 25-year educator at Julian Newman Elementary School, was recognized at the 2018 United Way Day of Caring program on September 21 at Central Church of Christ.

A former student nominated Cannon for the recognition. During his speech, Trent Jackson said that Cannon made learning fun and was happy that he had Cannon twice for second and fifth grade.

“When I heard that a former student wrote my recognition speech many years later, I was truly speechless,” reflects Cannon.

Cannon said teaching is two-fold. The kids impact you as much as you hope to impact them.

“I am honored to be recognized by the Athens-Limestone County United Way. The Day of Caring program was a joy to celebrate retired educators and community volunteers. 25 years of being an educator is truly a blessing and I enjoyed every minute of it,” said Cannon.
